* THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM

P          Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation.

C         Amen.

 

P          Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness.  Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.

Blessed are you, O God, maker and ruler of all things.  Your voice thundered over the waters at creation.  You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh and satisfy all living things.

Through the waters of the flood you carried those in the ark to safety.  You led your people Israel from slavery to freedom.  In the wilderness you nourished them with water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the promised land.

By the baptism of his death and resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom.  The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of promise.  He sends us to make disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

P          Let us pray.  O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST READING

L:         A reading from the book of Acts.

 

10:34Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality,  35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.  36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all.  37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced:  38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.  39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree;  40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear,  41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.  42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead.  43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

3:1So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.  2Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,  3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  4When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

28:1After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.  2And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.  3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.  4For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men.  5But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.  6He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.  7Then go quickly and tell his disciples, 'He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.' This is my message for you."  8So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples.  9Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" We believe in one God,

            the Father, the Almighty,

            maker of heaven and earth,

            of all that is, seen and unseen.

 

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

            the only Son of God,

            eternally begotten of the Father,

            God from God, Light from Light,

            true God from true God,

            begotten, not made,

            of one Being with the Father;

            through him all things were made.

            For us and for our salvation

                        he came down from heaven,

                        was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

                        and became truly human.

                        For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

                        he suffered death and was buried.

                        On the third day he rose again

                        in accordance with the scriptures;

                        he ascended into heaven

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:

This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

With this bread and cup

we remember our Lord's passover from death to life

as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

 

O God of resurrection and new life:

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us

and on these gifts of bread and wine.

Bless this feast.

Grace our table with your presence.

Come, Holy Spirit.

 

Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread.

Raise us up as the body of Christ for the world.

Breathe new life into us.

Send us forth,

burning with justice, peace, and love.

Come, Holy Spirit.

 

With your holy ones of all times and places,

with the earth and all its creatures,

SUNDAY HOSPITALITY AND THANKS:  Thank you to the Worship Committee and  all who were involved with the Holy Week and Easter services; the children’s Easter Event yesterday; the Shipmate’s decorating and preparations last night; the Choir and  music rehearsals; and to all the volunteers who helped in the Easter Brunch this morning.

THE CHURCH OFFICE and the Preschool will be closed on Monday, March 24th for the Easter holiday.  There will be no Morning Prayer on that day.

A SPECIAL WELCOME to Pastor Lori Doyle and members from Point Loma United Methodist Church.  We are happy to have you join us for the sunrise outdoor service on the cliffs.

YOUTH QUAKE:  Eight young people from our congregation will be attending the annual Junior High Youth Quake to be held in Costa Mesa March 28-30.  Please keep them in your prayers as they share the love of God with others from across the state of California.
